Been spending lots of time with Yanyan this past week, which is a good thing. Still had to show up for work for most of the week, but since hardly anyone is in the office, Cliff and I leave earlier than usual, which isn't all that bad. Finally got around to getting my hair cut, so now my head feels a few pounds lighter. In the meantime, I'm getting a little restless lately due to not having enough field time. Our first field maneuver for the new year is on the 8th, so I'm really looking forward to that. And what can I say. . . its really nice having Yanyan home for the holidays. Makes me not feel lonely anymore. |

Well, after a frantic rush during the last few days in the office before I take a long-overdue vacation, said long-overdue vacation was a nice respite from the frantic rush of few days before. And if your mind is able to untwist itself after that, congrats. Needless to say, I'm in a cheerier mood after having a nice R&R of the past four days. Yanyan arrived midday Thursday, and both of us trekked north to Camelot Command for Christmas. Unfortunately, its rather quiet this year because mom is on the other side of the planet tending the grandparents. Our hope is for the best, but the sad reality is very forgiving on these matters. The most recent reports back from that front is disappointing at best, and serves as yet another reminder that even the greatest of us cannot defy the deterrioration of old age. *sigh*. . . Because of our worries overseas, the holidays was quite subdued. And just as well I suppose. . . spending time with family is rewarding enough as it is. I also managed to bump into two old high school friends today, which was a surprise in and of itself. Both of them seem to be doing well (translation: gainfully employed), so its not all bad news. Yanyan will be tending affairs in Outpost Command V for the next several days since she does not have to be back at work until next week. Its good to have her home. |

This past week was a FUBAR in the making. Due to various time constraints and other factors, CT switched ISP providers on Wedensday night. And despite our best efforts and extensive initial planning, of course things had to go wrong. It was within the nature of the tasks we were doing, and thus should have been expected. Nonetheless, it was freakin annoying. So us three musketeers were up in the office until o'dark thirty on Wedensday, or Thursday morning, depending on how you look at it, and even then it took us Thursday and Friday to clean everything else up. A part of me is glad that we finally got this over with, and I have a new appreciation of fear of re-numbering servers, only because of our particular network configuration. The other part of me dreads the incoming weeks, as we prepare for the physical move in the office. We're expanding the HQ office, which itself is a good thing. The bad thing is it will introduce an unbelievable amount of work for us. But I suppose it could be worse. . . I could be sitting at home twiddling my thumbs doing nothing. . . that would be very bad. . . Going to spend time tomorrow doing routine maintenance work around the base and recover from the office holiday party that took place tonight (lots of food and merriment, and constant inquiries as to why Yanyan's not here). My platoon is having a holiday gathering before meeting for the final field exercise of the year. Unfortunately Rasengan is currently disabled, and I have to order some parts to repair it. . . and the parts are either sold out or are ludicrously expensive. Bastards. . . I'm almost tempted to just buy a new weapon and field that instead, except I've already invested way too many man hours and dollars to let Rasengan go to waste. Bastards. . . |

Well. . . last several days has kept me busy. . . Last weekend was spent at Las Vegas, visiting Yanyan while she worked on getting her exhibition put together at the annual PowerGen convention. Her stuff looked as good as it can be done, which is no small feat considering her experience. We also lost too much money at the casinos, which is prompting me to issuing an edict to bar all future trips to Las Vegas. . . at least until my luck changes or something. Rest of the week was spent at work getting things ready for yesterday's downtime. CT is switching ISPs and so we are going to have to renumber all of our servers. However, the ISP techs got bogged down in the weather (and a dead squirrel who caused a blackout in a significant part of the city) so they won't be done until Monday. Wedensday was spent at a Symantec conference learning about their revamped offerings now that they and Veritas are joined at the hip. Not surprising, I got more out of the Veritas presentation than the Symantec presentation. It was educational nonetheless. The downtime yesterday went fairly smoothly, despite the fact that we didn't do a whole lot other than migrate some servers behind a new firewall. Right after that I went home and packed (newly upgraded) Quincy X and XII and headed to campus to join in some digital mayhem with some ACM folks. Unfortunately, Quincy X decided to pout and not play nice, so I was not able to use it as a file server as originally planned. Otherwise, it was nice to see people again, and trade sniper fire with each other. Speaking of which, work on Quincy X is finally completed. I've been diverting a few hours each week in revamping Quincy X. The new system has been upgraded from a Athlon 1Ghz to a P4 1.6Ghz, and the data store has been changed from a 120GB RAID1 and a 80GB RAID1 to a 240GB RAID1+0. While not as good as a RAID5 configuration, it should prove to be a slight improvement over the old configuration. Despite the hiccup experienced last night, she's up and running without much trouble. I even got a BBS system up and running on it and reliving old memories by playing Legend of the Red Dragon and Tradewars 2002. Ahh. . . I feel old now. . . :p |

Tons of weirdness happened during work last week, so it wasn't hard finding myself stretched to the limits with very little room left to spare. But I took what came, squared my shoulders, and continued marching on. What else could I do? I was able to get away from it a little while over the weekend though. . . Yanyan was on assignment in Las Vegas prepping for a major exhibition. So through some thoughtful planning, I was able to visit her and see what fun things she was doing. We then proceeded to lose oodles of money in the casinos, much to our dismay. But it was fun spending time with each other. Going to Las Vegas twice in one year. . . I must be making up for lost travel time over the past couple of years. . . Originally I had planned to join a few hundred other troopers in a massive field exercise this weekend. However, Bill scheduled a major network downtime this weekend, and unfortunately work won out in the final decision. The only upside is, if we are able to get the network downtime completed in a reasonable fashion, I might be able to make it to the ACM LAN party on campus. Its been a long time since I've visited them. . . it should be a good homecoming. . . |
