Cursed November 30 2004, 10:21 am
It seems I'm cursed with not being able to securely keep a USB flash drive with me. I've barely gotten acquainted with my 1GB stick, and I've ALREADY LOST IT!!! Grrr. . . not happy. . .

Last known location was somewhere at home, because I distinctly remember taking it out of my computer at work and putting it in my bag. The question is. . . where is it at home???

Grrr. . . definitely not happy. . .

Back to work November 29 2004, 11:08 pm
Argh. . . I was almost finished typing this latest update. . . and I managed to hit the wrong key and wipe everything out. . . grrr. . .

Anyways. . . work was frantic as expected from the first day back after an extended weekend. Nothing unmanageable, and I was even able to pick up a couple of new skills/responsibilities. Not too shabby. . .

I've been contracted (yet again) to help resurrect a dying system. This is one of the worst cases I've seen. . . with a confirmed dead power supply, and a possibly bad motherboard with three overloaded capacitors. . . at least the hard drive is salvageable. . . and I'm crossing my fingers for the CPU and RAM. . .

Quincy XII was acting a bit sluggish lately, so I threw more RAM at it. The increase from 1GB to 2GB saw some increase from performance, but unfortunately it looks like the new RAM I picked up didn't agree with the old RAM already in place. The system auto-downgraded itself from DDR400 to DDR320. . . I'll have to diagnose it some more before deciding whether the increase in quantity is enough to offset the decrease in quality. . .

With me busy for the next couple of days, Quincy XI's overhaul will have to wait. . . but I might be able to squeeze in a few hours of programming tomorrow night and finish off Epimelites. . . we'll see. . .

Spoils of War. . . November 27 2004, 12:17 am
After a nice stomach filling Thanksgiving dinner, preparations were made and battle plans were laid last night for this morning's sortie.

Unfortunately, the pickings were slim for this year's Black Friday. Last year's was much more fulfilling. Nonetheless, I was able to restock a couple of spare HDDs, as well as picked up some other little stuff that is nice to have but not worth paying full price for.

Due to the fact that I spent all night last night prepping for battle, and got naught a wink's worth of sleep, I was drained pretty much all of today after the shopping spree. Considering that I used to be able to shrug off skipping a night's sleep a few years ago. . . this isn't good. I'm getting old. And that's not a good thing. . .

YanYan was a trusty comrade in today's excursion. . . lending a much needed helping hand in numerous occasions. I was tempted to head out without her because she looked so warm and comfy in bed in the morning, but looking back, I'm glad she came along. So to repay her dedication, I'm taking her shopping tomorrow and see what we'll pick up from that.

Epimelites will have to wait until I get home at this rate. I've spent more time prepping for Black Friday and handling maintenance operations for both Camelot Command and Freeport, I haven't had much time to do a whole lot else. . .

Sleepy. . . sleepy. . . sleepy. . .

Success! November 24 2004, 04:16 pm
Woohoo! I finally overcame the stumbling block I placed on myself in the Epimelites project.

Turns out I was trying to make a call to the database for while inserting data. . . and the call was made before the data was inserted. Veediot. . .

Epimelites is now 80% completed and on track again to be finished in the coming weeks.

Happy happy happy. . . joy joy joy. . . happy happy happy. . . joy joy joy. . .

Meanwhile, YanYan and I will be departing from OC4 for Camelot Command for the holidays, and will return within a few days. Evil Twin should be enroute already, clearing the LZ for our arrival. I should be able to link up with the rest of my squad shortly after that. It'll be good to see the troops again. . .

Victoreee~~~! November 22 2004, 03:23 pm
For what should've been a 90 minute exam, I blasted through the Net+ test in 35 minutes. . . the extra five minutes was for reviewing a couple of things that bugged me, which in the end wouldn't have mattered.

I passed with a 96% score (assuming a max score of 800 like the SATs). . .

We're having (possibly our last) an AD&D game tonight. . . which will followed by me and YanYan jamming away on our new GameCube. Then a little R&R for a couple of weeks. . . and then I'll be tackling either my Linux cert or my MCSE, depending on what CT needs. . .

The Calm before The Storm November 21 2004, 09:23 pm
Yup. . . that's the state I'm in right now. In less than 12 hours I will be heading in for my Net+ exam, and I've done all the preparations I can. The book has been drained of knowledge. My practice test scores have stabilized (85%. . . with a random spike of 97%. . .). I'm emotionally numb from the events of the past few days at work. . . even though it isn't helping, it isn't hurting either.

I can pass this. . . I can pass this. . . I will it to happen. . . I will it to happen. . .

(Considering that I've worked with modern networks for 5-6 years now, this test should be a non-issue for me. . . but its the stupid ancient networks question that they throw out that trips me endlessly. . .)

Suckage November 19 2004, 07:10 pm
*sigh*. . . I'm still numbed from today. . . it started off nice, but almost immediately took a nose dive. CT was hit by a swath of Reduction In Force today. . . and even though Professional Services were the ones tasked with generating revenue, it was those of us in HQ (non-billable overheads) that caught the brunt of it. The ones who toil endlessly to support the guys and gals out there. Yeah. . . talk about lopping your own legs off.

I'm still counting the blessings that I wasn't hit. . . but if another one comes through in the next couple of months, I can't guarantee that. Unfortunately, one person in our group was, and I really hate to see him go. He's a good guy, and happens to be our dungeon master in our current D&D game. So yeah. . . major suckage. . .

This weekend's going to be pretty somber, as I wrap up preparations for my Net+, and do some soul searching and steel myself for the worst in the coming weeks. . .

Bum rushed November 17 2004, 11:58 pm
Wheee. . . last several days were busy. Spent the weekend prepping for the Net+ exam and working with a client sorting his computer problems out.

Spent Monday night with the guys continuing our AD&D game. While much progression was done in the way of moving the story along, Evil Twin and I were about to launch a mutiny because the rest of the group decided to spend over an hour discussing how to pull a couple of levers in a control room which controlled all the trap doors in the dungeon. I mean. . . geez. . . spending fifteen minutes or so discussing who stands where and observes the results, fine. But an hour theorizing what would happen if one lever is pulled one direction and whether that would effect all the other levers and whether the sun would come up the next day? Palor help me if I didn't draw my enchanted Bastard Sword and did some bashing and smashing and team killed. Drives me nuts. . .

It has rained incessently over the past several days, to the point where there was flooding at parts of the city. The rain finally stopped earlier this evening, although weather reports predict another deluge in the coming days. Joys of wonderous joys. . .

Net+ prepping is coming along nicely. Will definitely be ready by Monday (when I'm scheduled to take the exam). . . with luck, I'll be playing my GameCube over Thanksgiving. . .

Double Dash! November 12 2004, 08:14 pm
Thanks to Nintendo's recent holiday bundle, I have finally added the GameCube to my list of entertainment devices. In short, for the forseeable future (read, until PlayStation3 and XBox2 comes out), I'm good for a while.

Of course. . . it don't matter squat until I complete my Net+. . . as that's the deal I made with myself (and with YanYan). . .

Boys. . . its cramming time. . .

Stuck November 11 2004, 07:12 pm
Well. . . Epimelites is stuck at 70%. . . due to the fact that for some reason one of the PHP/MySQL calls isn't working properly. It works fine in a separate test script, but when I plug it into the production code, it chokes. Cannot fathom why. Left while trying to insert meaningful error dialogs into the code last night. . . probably won't work on it tonight because of my hockey game.

Grr. . . so close. . . yet so far. . . hopefully by me walking away for a little bit, my brain will regroup and produce a solution. . . if it doesn't get frozen by tonight's game first. . .

Progress made. . . November 9 2004, 11:25 pm
Epimelites is coming along nicely now that I actually sat down and seriously hacked it. I'd say I'm about 50% done. . . with the remaining 50% dealing with formatting and implementing the "edit/modify" function. Definitely can be done by end of this year, if not end of this month.

BTW, I have to say Firefox rules over Internet Explorer as a browser. Much better functionality, and I'm not getting annoying "ActiveX controls failed" errors as I used to on IE. The feature I like best is the "tabbed browsing". . . very beneficial for when I'm developing web apps. . . like right now!

Okay. . . Net+ prepping time. . . no rest for the wicked. . .

Back to work. . . November 9 2004, 08:50 pm
Despite losing my beloved 256MB USB flash drive last month, the replacement 1GB USB flash drive finally came in today, much to my joy and happiness.

With it I now have the motivation to tackle the Epimelites project again. It has grown from a quest for a simple Systems Admin script to something a bit more complicated. . . at least from the coding side. The PHP/MySQL calls aren't that difficult yet. . . its the stupid formatting that I'm trying to plow through. There has to be a easier way of doing this without breaking the script!!!

Okay. . . some more coding. . . then some more Net+ prepping. . . last night's prep session went pretty well. . . at this rate I should be ready to tackle the exam by next week.

Slacker November 8 2004, 10:54 pm
Yeah. . . okay. . . I'll admit it. . . I've been slacking off for the past several weeks. Partly because I've been (mentally) tired from work when I get home. Also partly because I'm (emotionally) exhausted from taking roller coaster rides what with the way the network was acting during most of October. And also partly because I'm (physically) exhausted from undue influence of the weather. Okay, the last one might be some what of a stretch. . . but its possible!

But enough of slacking off. . . I had set some goals for myself at the beginning of the year. . . and tacked on a couple of more during the course of the last ten months, and damn it, I'm going to see those goals accomplished before the year is over.

Starting with Net+. . .

We're DOOMED!!! November 3 2004, 11:17 pm
Yup. . . the next four years are going to suck even more than the past four. . . it amazes me that people can't see the warning signs. . . the damning portents. . . and to continue blindly follow the blind. . .

Scary scary thoughts. . .
