Hallow Ween. . . October 31 2002, 09:53 pm
So Halloween's here. Whee. . . off I go to 6th Street with a bunch of ACMers and Evil Twin. No good can come out of this, I can already sense it. . .

Solistice. . . October 30 2002, 06:31 pm
Recieved two calls in the morning today. The first was Amber from North Hays County EMS, the people who were responsible for delivering me to the hospital two months ago. It was obvious they were wondering where their money was, and fortunately my insurance company already cut the check, so I only need to mail it off to them. Score one for Progressive.

Second call was from a manager from Road Runner, inquiring about my current network status. I informed him that the situation is unchanged, I'm still getting crappy service. He then proposed to send one of his "elite" technicians to help resolve this matter. Shortly after 11AM, the technician arrived, and proceeded to be pretty much unhelpful for the 30+ minutes he was here. He checked my signal strength, and made sure that I was not losing any packets. He then confirmed that the "hub problem" they had at the Riverside nexus was fixed sometime last week. However, upon trying to download SP3 for Win2k, the file arrived corrupted as expected. He then threw up his hands denying any knowledge on how to fix this, and proposed to call the only person he knows in the company that might have a clue on how to fix this. Both Evil Twin and I agreed that he had no clue what he was doing, and we questioned how he gained "elite" status in the company. While I was in class his supervisor called the apt as a follow-up to the visit this morning. He asked me to return his call soonest (he gets out of his office at 4PM) to resolve this issue. Hopefully I might get some sort of workable solution tomorrow.

While on the drive back home today from class, I got this strange feeling creeping through me. It was not until I was well into the 30 minute commute that I understood what it was. . . I was at peace with myself. Despite all the crap that has happened to me lately, and all the crap that is about to happen, and all the odd ends and whatnots that will be coming my way in the next few months, I felt that things were okay. For once in a very very long time I was okay with how things were going. I was not complaining about the traffic too much, and was simply enjoying the silent drive and appreciating the scenary along Loop 360. Unfortuantely it didn't last long, as the closer I got to Austin, my mood began deterriorating. I hate it when people do not know how to drive. . .

Humpty doo. . . October 29 2002, 08:47 pm
Nothing much exciting has occured in the past two days. I've been going to class and learning more about Linux (making me even more dangerous than before *Evil grin*), and playing Dynasty Warriors III with Evil Twin when I get home at night. Learned how to recompile the Linux kernel in class today, and even though they claim its useful, I hope I'll never have to use it; it takes forever and a freakin' day to compile.

As a part of my Linux training, I've decided to use Quincy IX to the fullest. It is currently sporting 4 different operating systems spread across two hard drives: Windows 2000 Professional, Mandrake Linux, RedHat Linux, and I'm finishing the install of Slackware Linux even as I type this. Now I get to experiment how well they work, and maybe even set up Samba for inter-OS file-sharing. . . *evil grin*

Just got a call from the shipyard today. It seems that the Bismark is ready for deployment ahead of schedule. They will be putting the finishing touches on her by tomorrow, and I'm already scheduling an impromptu trip back to Camelot Command this Friday for the proper christening of the new vessel. Life is getting good again. . . :)

Whoa. . . October 28 2002, 12:12 am
Was summoned back to Camelot Command for the weekend, because Quincy V Rev A & B were both coming down with something. The 3rd party consultant tapped for repairing them was not performing satisfactorily, so I was recalled to execute the repairs. Needless to say, I got the job done right the first time. And all was well.

I did pick up a new toy while I was up there. I'm proud to announce that CCCCC.net now has wireless capabilities. The new Linksys Wireless 4-port Router is a highly welcomed addition to the network. Now I can surf the web on Quincy VIII while I'm lying in bed. And there was much joy throughout the land.

Evil Twin is visiting for the week. I made him play some DDR, and had some interesting results from that experiment. I won't go into too much detail, but he definitely needs more practice. :)

ISP Woes. . . October 25 2002, 11:21 am
So it seems that RR Austin have known that their hubs in Riverside (East) sector have been having problems for the past three months, but have neglected to inform any of their customers about these issues. Plus, they have yet to come up with a effective solution for the problem. So if any of you are located near Riverside, and are having cable issues, this is why. So spread the word. Never underestimate the capabilities of an informed consumer.

Grrr. . . . . . October 24 2002, 11:13 pm
So I went to the apartment office hoping to talk to the leasing manager, and lo and behold the girl that called the towing company on me was there again today, and regretfully informed me that the manager would be in a meeting all day. How coincidental!!! Something is fishy, and I intend to resolve this one way or another. Showdown is set for tomorrow morning.

Minor Site Addition. . . October 24 2002, 01:15 am
Fiddled around with some of my Systems Administration tools, and decided to post some of them online. So as a result, I updated alot of the pages concerning CCCCC.net. Of note is the introduction of a network diagram portraying the way I have set up CCCCC.net. Critical information regarding the network have been removed as a security precaution, but nonetheless should give you an idea of how things look, and what upgrades I'm planning.

Likewise, most, if not all, of the CCCCC information pages have been updated. CCCCC-MKX made its debut tonight, and hopefully will materialize in the near future.

Networking Crap October 23 2002, 09:50 pm
Spent the morning talking to Road Runner because I got fed up with having every download (even browsing webpages) being corrupted upon arrival in my machine(s). The first level tech was actually knowledgeable this time around, but unfortunately the problem is still unresolved. Suppposedly a technician is suppose to come out here Friday morning to check the connection, so we'll see if that fixes things.

Spent the afternoon in class, learning more things about Linux. Like I've been saying, I've learned more about Linux in the last three days than I've learned in the last four years in college. I've been in the wrong educational institution. . .

Had a chat with the apt management about the parking fiasco. Ironically the girl I talked to was the one who called the towing company. Supposedly she had wanted to park in the "spot" next to mine, although technically that isn't a valid parking spot. I'm resolved to go in tomorrow morning and raise hell with their manager and get to the bottom of this. This is BS and I have had enough of it living here. OC3's contract will be amended to end in December, and plans for the deployment of OC4 have been accelerated as a result. There are certain things I'm willing to slide, but there are certain things where I draw the line. The line has been drawn. Its victory or death.

Spock! October 22 2002, 11:06 pm
Tonight a few ACMers and I had the pleasure of being in the presence of Leonard Nimoy during his book tour on campus today. He spent about 40 minutes going over the materials that were in his latest photographic book about his vision of the feminine side of God, and what kind of philosophical controversies it might bring about in the current metropolitan age. All in all it was a very interesting night, although the 20 minutes of Q&A brought about quite a bit of humor to the audience (with the obligatory Spock inquiries being the cause of amusement for most).

Other than that, drove Bonnie home in the morning (she was stranded at OC3 due to the major hailstorm last night), and it appears that we have departed in relatively good terms. Things that needed to be said, were said. Gestures that needed to be made, were made. There are lots more work to be done in this area before things get better, but the outlook seems to be promising. Besides, she did buy me a 120GB 7200RPM HDD as a gesture of good-will. :)

Class today was on a slow start. Arrived at the training area realizing that I had somehow lost my driver's license somewhere, and spent the first hour wondering where my license went instead of paying attention to the importance of mounting and unmounting resources in Linux. Also managed to fall asleep as well. Not exactly what I paid $3000 for. . . :( I eventually remembered that I had left the license at the towing yard, and sped there after class to retrieve it. I'm still planning on taking them to court for their insulting Agamemnon.

I will spend the rest of the night getting Quincy IX online and setting up various Linux distros on it to get the feel of things.

Bastards. . . October 22 2002, 02:03 am
First its campus gestapo. . . now the freakin' towing company which the apartment complex contracted decided that I had "double parked" and towed the Agamemnon in the middle of the night, in the middle of the largest freakin' hailstorm in Texas history. And charged me $121 for towing fees to boot. This is one I am definitely going to take to court, as the apartment management policy clearly states that a parking spot is defined by having two white lines on either side. If that's the case, the area to the left of the spot in which I was "double parked" in did not have two white lines, and hence is not a parking spot. If it is not a parking spot, how am I double parked? If I am not double parked, why the hell was I towed? Yes, the towing company has just been entered into my infamous blacklist. I hope they have insurance on their property value.

The Linux certification training began today, and things went along fairly smoothly. . . the instructor himself only had completed his training in April, and that was only because the SOHO he owned lost all but one of its customer base on one particular day in September. Here's a hint, the majority of his customers were based in New York City.

Alright. . . off to bed. . . and then plans for retaliation go into effect in the morning. Bastards will pay for this. . .

Whispers of the Past. . . October 20 2002, 10:10 pm
Okay. . . no updates in the past couple of days because I've been busy.

Trip down to San Antonio to visit Bridgette went pretty smoothly. Got the quick tour of "A Day in the Life of. . ." from her point of view, and it seems she's keeping herself busy. She's currently fretting about getting into Physical Therapy School, but I'm sure she'll do fine.

Bonnie's plane arrived without much hassle, and we spent all day Saturday getting reacquainted. This involved some face-to-face talk, some DDRing with the ACMers down in Taylor-MAX, some dinner with Ryan, and some other activities that wrapped up the evening. We managed to work out some of the major issues between us, I think, so this may open up some possibilities in the future. Maybe. . .

Made some impulsive purchases today. . . got the NGE D&R DVD as well as a couple of hardcover books (Dune and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls). Also got Dragon Half DVD because Bonnie was interested, and the XHTML/XML/Java2 technical reference book so I can make future websites XHTML compliant.

Linux training starts tomorrow. Whee. . .

Not good. . . October 17 2002, 02:14 pm
After several days of rebuilding Qiuncy VII, things are no better than when I started this on Sunday. The system is still somewhat unstable, although I've narrowed the problem down to either a set of bad RAM or failing hard drives. The latter is a bit more possible, as my 60GB drive just bit the dust after making some god awful noises this morning. Chances are I'm looking at the 13GB dying pretty soon as well. :(

Other than that, I'm about to head out the door for a inspection of the prototype of the Agamemnon at a nearby shipyard. And then tonight there's a CQB simulation I'm running for some ACMers. And then tomorrow a day trip down to San Antonio to visit Bridgette. And then Saturday Bonnie is coming in for a few days worth of vacation.

Busy busy busy weekend. . .

Quincy's Lobotomy October 14 2002, 07:17 pm
Well, I finally decided to execute a much needed lobotomy on Quincy VII. Went and got several spare parts and began the operation on Sunday night. But things weren't going well, as MS's servers refuse to cooperate and offer a stable connection. So I finally gave up and went to bed, leaving Quincy VII to try and download its own updates.

Spent the afternoon of Monday at the Outlet Mall in San Marcos with Shashank. Remind me never to go down there again. I spent way too much money down there, and have therefore banned myself from going there again for the next six months. $230 for clothes, shoes, and a drill kit for my power tool. WAY TOO MUCH money. . . :(

Now I am recuperating at the ACM house from spending too much money. Dinner is being planned out, and I will probably spend the rest of the night rebuilding Quincy VII. Somehow.

On a related note, I have enough spare parts now to build a entire new system. Whee. . . .

Busy Day. . . October 13 2002, 12:34 am
Spent the early afternoon at Ballroom Dancing class, realizing that Ballroom Dancing is WAY HARDER than it looks. I had the dubious pleasure of making a fool of myself while trying to dance with lots of cute girls. Well, I suppose I get credit for even trying.

Spent the late afternoon and early evening helping out at the ACM Programming Contest. Was the standby judge, and derived some pleasure in marking "DENIED" on various incorrect submissions. All in the name of improving aspiring computer programmers.

Spent the remainder of the evening out with Ketan, Shrew, Long, and Lisa watching The Transporter. While the story line was quite dubious, there was plenty of action and interesting driving scenes. All I am saying is wait until the Bismarck arrives from the shipyard. Its on.

The BIG Event October 11 2002, 11:12 pm
Helped out at the first BIG event ACM's hosting for this year. We had a relatively good showing of people, and the 1st DDR Tournament was a success. I even managed to place third out of the tweleve people who played. I have some more training to do before I can snatch first place.

Okay. . . my feet are hurting now. Sara might come over to the ACM house (where Long, Ketan, and I are recuperating), and there might be more DDRing later. Time for R&R.

Great Expectations October 10 2002, 05:34 pm
Was lounging around OC3 until Rus called with network problems, so I headed out there to troubleshoot. Turns out his Linksys router suffered catastrophic failures, so I advised him to contact Linksys and get a replacement unit to be sent out there ASAP (he believes that the unit is still under warranty).

Swung by Anshin shortly after that to turn in my tuition and talk with the new representative that replaced our initial contact. Apparently there has been a slight change, and the salary has been increased to $47k / year (from the original $42k / year). Frankly, I am not one to complain if this works out.

I now intend to get some food now and then head over to campus and use the music building to create some fine harmonious music. Proper celebration of the unexpected raise will come later.

Damage Control October 10 2002, 01:22 am
Today was a Stay-At-Home-and-Do-What-Needs-To-Be-Done Day. . . and for the most part it worked out pretty well. I finally did my laundry and took out the trash, and cooked some food to last me until tomorrow, all in all it was productive.

Recieved a call in the early afternoon from Mark Katana, the Director of Operations at Anshin Corp. He called to explain the situation, allay my FUD, and generally tried to exercise some kind of damage control over a really messed up situation. We talked for quite a bit, but were able to compare notes and straighten certain things out. That said, it looks like my immediate plans are in place again, albeit a few weeks late (training is officially set to start on the 21st).

Tried to do some more DDR practice today, but my feet are too exhuasted to do any good. I was scrambling on the three and four footers when I should be breezing through the fives and venturing into the sixes. Bad day for DDR.

Wrapped up the night with a moderately long conversation with Bonnie on the phone. I was going to call her at eleven CT (which is ten her time), but she called me before I could pick up the phone. She has this uncanny tendency to do that. . . whether that's good or bad I'm not sure. Nonetheless we managed to get along fairly well, and things ended on a good note.

I admit. I do miss her still.

Oh. . . *pant*. . . Holy. . . *pant*. . . CRAP!!!. . . *pant* October 8 2002, 11:38 pm
. . . *pant*. . . *pant*. . . *pant*. . .

After a jam-packed company night with Deustch Bank, Eric decided he had time to check out DDR I & DDR II (the V2.0 DDR Pads). So after we helped clean up we convoyed back to OC3 and jammed on the pads for almost 2 hours straight, ending on a rude note when we finished the Paranoia Remix (6 feet - Basic), but the game insisted on failing us. It was quite rude.

Other than that, spent most of the morning asleep, most of the afternoon helping Rus get situated in his SOHO (he just got back from Alaska this weekend), and the early evening doing some damage control on certain aspects of my world domination plans. All in all, a semi-productive day.

Transition October 7 2002, 05:23 pm
Recieved some disturbing news about the Anshin matter, so I took the initiative and implemented contingency plans before matters got worse. This definitely constitutes a wrench in my long-range plans, but that's what contingency plans are for. I will not be deterred from my goal of world domination that easily.

On a completely unrelated note, the doctor has officially discharged me from his care. One look at me leaning on my (injured) shoulder, and one more look at the X-Ray has him convinced that the bone will not somehow disfigure itself and disable me in any way. Post-discharge care includes not pushing myself over the limit, and assume that my body knows more than I do. He predicted complete and full recovery to occur sometime around end of December.

Unfortunately, that means that Navy SEALs training will have to be pushed back to until sometime in December, maybe even Janurary. Recertifying my clearance for flight operations on Enigma One will also have to wait until then. But nothing will prevent me from improving my mad DDR skillz until I am able to compete for the world championship. Muwahahaha. . .

Oh holy crap. . . October 6 2002, 03:05 am
Somehow I stumbled onto a impromptu weekend project for the better part of my waking hours on Saturday. After the extensive use of the DDR pads V1.1 on Friday night, it was determined that the mere side framing was not providing enough support for full blown DDR action. It was then decided that a second revision was required.

So the day started with me hopping down to the ACM house for a late late lunch, and then immediately found myself in the middle of a DDR modificiation mission. Went to Home Depot for the necessary materials with Shashank, and we spent the next several hours upgrading the DDR pads to V2.0. The result. . . ?

DDR Konamix CD - $32

2 improved DDR pads - $25

3/4" thick 49" x 97" Fiberboard - $15

Hardwood Floor Covering - $35

Staple gun and extra staples - $25

Watching Long flip us off while we are taking pictures of him going at it on the upgraded DDR pad - PRICELESS

For most people, their weekend project involves home improvement. For DDR fanatics, its all about the DDR. :)

. . . . . . blarg. . . . . . October 5 2002, 02:47 pm
Decided to go and hang out with ACMers again for Friday night, at the very least to observe my birthday on Thursday.

The evening started with a leisurely game of Settlers of Cataan (leisurely because I was playing with 3 newbies, and Shrew was playing hardcore with 3 veterans).

Then it progressed to Long's friend's drinking party. It is absolutely amazing how fast people disappear from college parties as soon as the alcohol disappears. When we arrived there were at least a hundred people there, all jam packed in the ENTIRE (inside AND outside AND the staircase) first floor of the apartment building. We managed to squeeze in into the room and get a few cups of "Jungle Juice", but after the second round the well ran dry. Five minutes after that the room was cleared of people. Absolutely amazing.

So we retired back to OC3 for a DDR Post-party. We let Sara, Long, and Ketan get a good start in their DDR careers, while Dan and I gave each other a run for our money. Shrew was happily straddling the middle ground, until Patricia showed up and whooped all of us. Man can she move on those pads. Dan and I were barely keeping up with her most of the time (by keeping up I mean making at least half the points she had by the end of the song).

Things began to wind down at around 4AMish, so we bounced down to Kerby at Kerby, and quelled our famished stomachs. It was at this time that I decided to switch my plans for Saturday, and declared that I would be going to the Ballroom Dancing class instead of playing Paintball. There was much discussion about this, but the decision was made. Everyone dispersed at shortly before 6AM, and I believe that as soon as I laid down in bed at 6AM, my entire system shutdown due to overload.

Unfortunately, system startup did not occur until well past the starting time for the Ballroom Dancing class. So I'll just have to make it to next week's class somehow. Meanwhile, I have to fix some damage to my neural pathways. . . I can't activate the hyper-heuristics process anymore since last night's outing.

Paladin's Motorcycle Repair Fund October 4 2002, 08:55 pm
Well. . . finally talked to the shop today, and it looks like the costs for parts necessary to repair Enigma One is going to exceed $1200. . . far more than I had originally anticipated. So after asking for a list of part numbers, I decided to do some searching online. . . and was promptly rewarded with merchants that carried the parts I needed, at $1000 total.

Because of this, I hereby declare the creation of the Paladin's Motorcycle Repair Fund, a non-profit fund to help Paladin (me) bring his trusty steed (Enigma One) back into working condition in order to smite evil where it may appear. Donations are being accepted, although I do prefer untraceable cash donations. :)

*sigh*. . . time to smite some evil on foot, I suppose. . .

Surprise surprise. . . October 4 2002, 03:14 am
Got home from watching Undercover Brother with some ACMers, and was rewarded with a phone call from Bonnie. Haven't talked to her in over a month, and the last time we spoke (through email) it didn't really end on good terms. So spent the next four hours talking to her, and found that the hostility that used to be there from the horrible break-up wasn't there anymore. I'm not exactly sure what it is that replaced it, but I'm sure given time I'll figure it out soon enough.

Honestly, it (collectively, the phone conversation and the self-discovery) was the best birthday present I've had in a long time.

Gumshoe October 3 2002, 05:45 pm
Did a little more digging on Anshin Corp's activities. Went by the supposed office space that will be our training center on the 14th. Apparently the place is actually located in New Horizons technical training center, which makes it seem a bit more legit. Spoke to the account liason there, and confirmed that Anshin is scheduled for a room on the 14th, but the liason knew nothing beyond the fact that the class involves Linux training. 14th. . . here we go. . .

Yea. . . I'm getting old!!! October 3 2002, 11:09 am
Woke up this morning from an incoming transmission announcing the imminent arrival of the BNS Agamemnon. She arrived a bit early, but was welcomed nonetheless. The change of command occured in short order, with me relinquishing command of the Bannockburn and assuming command of the Agamemnon at around 9:54AM. And thus people rejoiced.

And then was promptly reminded by my father (who brought the Agamemnon in) that I was getting old. It could be worse, I suppose. . . I could be reminded that I was getting old while lying in a hospital bed recuperating from a motorcycle accident.

Sudden Change of Command October 2 2002, 04:42 pm
Well, so much for that idea. Just got word that Agamemnon's arrival has been bumped up to tomorrow morning at 10:00AM. Guess I better clean out Bannockburn and say my goodbyes before then.

Situation: Poor October 2 2002, 12:51 am
Damn. . . I'm coming down with something. . . sinuses have completely crippled me, and I'm losing cortical plane of focusing. . . memory banks are suffering random outages, and consciousness cohesion is well below acceptable limits.

I'm getting old. . . . . . and sick. :(

Toodle Doo. . . October 1 2002, 11:37 pm
Groggy today. So groggy most of day passed by without me noticing. Arrgh. . .

Insurance company guy called wanting to have photographs of the bike. Made arrangements with Foohey for him to arrive onsite and do what he needs. Not sure why photos are needed, but I'll find out when he reports back to me after the photoshoot.

Due to the fact that Enigma One is grounded until repairs are complete, and that Bannockburn has reached the end of her life cycle, I have been relieved of command of the Bannockburn effective Saturday. In its place, I will be given temporary command of the battleship Agamemnon which will arrive on Saturday. Bannockburn will be returned to home port for final preparations for decommissioning. I had originally planned to relinquish her at the same time the Bismark is commissioned, but since the crash in Enigma One, my plans have been completely thrown out of whack. Nonetheless, Bannockburn was a good ship, and served me well to the end. I'm going to miss her.

Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, I will grow yet older in two days. Thursday will mark my 223rd year in this plane of existence. Hooray for me. Not.
