Tweedle dee and tweedle doo. . . September 30 2004, 11:26 pm
YanYan's birthday went pretty well. I made her a chocolate covered strawberry cake, as well as a batch of white chocolate covered strawberries. At first I thought this year's batch didn't come out as well as I had hoped (the consistency of the chocolate sauce seemed wrong). . . but man. . . that's some damn good sauce once you taste it. I don't believe I have tasted anything like it ever before. . . its even sweeter than Evil Twin's sugar tea. . . Dinner was at Oasis, where she has some salmon and I had some crawfish etoufee. . . all in all a good evening.

Which was immediately followed by a short excursion to Houston for my Microsoft Conference. We left a bit later than I had planned, but managed to get into Houston in time for YanYan to meet a senior designer at HP/Compaq for advice. We were obligated to head over to Chinatown on Bellevue for dinner, and while it was expensive, it was quite good.

Spend pretty much all day Tuesday in the MS conference. Learned some interesting things, although can't say it was as technical as I had hoped. Ironically, the presentation made by some of our more talented consultants was the most technical of all. . . and it happened to be one I found the most useful. Go figure. . .

Since by the time the conference ended, it was rush hour in Houston, we once again felt obligated to stay for dinner in Chinatown, followed by a short shopping trip to pick up some tasty goodies that are not available in Austin.

On the way out of Houston. . . we were waylaid by a nice Swedish store named IKEA. Yeah. . . bad news. If there are three stores in the world that I should be banned from, they are: Fry's, Home Depot, and IKEA (in no particular order). We wandered around in the store oooing and ahhing like a couple of foreign tourists. . . and wound up with more stuff in our hands. We did get some great ideas on how to furnish the Outpost Command V though. . . (OC5 slated for deployment in 2005).

Last couple of days at work have been playing catch up. Poor Cliff was by himself Monday and Tuesday, until I was able to relieve him yesterday. Today everyone's back at the shop (Joe and Bill were at ConSec for their CPEs). . . so its back into the void yet again. . .

And yes. . . my Net+ is horrendously behind schedule. . . I vow to get this done soon. . .

My head hurts. . . September 26 2004, 11:25 am
. . . it hurts alot. I think we stayed in the hot tub too long last night (I think the timer for the water jets are shot). . . and we were in the hot tub because both of us were sore from playing two sessions of laser tag (I'm getting old. . .). . . oww. . . my head. . .

On the other hand, today's Yanyan's birthday. . . so I intend to make some chocolate covered strawberries for her, a little birthday cake to celebrate with, and also take her shopping at the mall later when she comes home from work. Happy birthday baby!

. . . oww. . . my head hurts. . .

Being productive September 24 2004, 11:54 am
After a fairly bustling day at work yesterday, I spent a fairly bustling night at Ed the CEO's place right after work. He's been having some issues with his home network (mostly because of his kids downloading malware onto several systems). . . so we waged war on it for a few hours, while setting up file/print sharing behind the firewall and double-checking whether his video card was going bad by testing it out on Far Cry.

All this was interrupted by a very tasty dinner (beef bourguignon) made by his wife, followed by a fudge covered ice cream pound cake sprinkled with strawberries. He's a very fortunate man, I say. . . its surprising he stays fit with that kind of fare every night. . . :P

Meanwhile, I've got to button down and finish Net+. . . its about a month overdue now, and I'm going to be out of town beginning of next week for a Microsoft Conference. . . grr. . . not enough time. . . need to clone self. . .

How the mighty falls. . . September 22 2004, 10:20 am
Well, after several days of frentic work. . . the CCCCC.net restructuring is almost complete. . . Quincy XIII is online and ready for new assignments. . . Quincy IX was rebuilt (for the third time) and brought back online without any further issues last night. . . and Quincy V is being finalized and ready for transport back to Freeport to assume a Primary Data Archive role. . . all that's left to be done is rebuild Quincy XI, and that'll be that for the restructuring project.

On the software side, I finally took a couple of hours to rebuild the bleem! Refugee Boards. . . something that has slipped off of my priority queue for the past several months. After about six hours of hacking away at it last night, I was able to port over all the data from the old (and nonfunctional) bulletin board system into the new (and functional) BBS. Already some of the old (and die hard) members are trickling back. . . so its all good. . .

Somehow (not sure how yet). . . I managed to smack the crap out of a toe on my left foot. Was walking around in living room and then *SMACK*. . . mangled the toe. . . From the way its discolored and swollen, I'd say I either dislocated it, fractured it, or broke it. . . or some combination thereof. . . and yes, it hurts. That's probably how David took down Goliath. . . David slingshotted a rock and smacked the crap out of Goliath's toe. Cheater.

Black flag on the last lap. . . September 20 2004, 12:13 am
Grrrr. . . spent the whole weekend (and the better part of last week) restructuring the Quincy network. . . which basically entailed taking apart Quincy V, IX, and XIII, and put them back together in completely new configurations. . . Quincy XI was going to be the final phase of the restructuring. . .

Unfortunately, it never got to that Quincy XI. Phase I, which was laying the software foundations for Quincy IX and XIII went okay, not spectacular. When it came to Phase II, which was moving the bulk of the services from Quincy V to IX, things started breaking down. The only good news is that Quincy XIII is fully operational again, awaiting the wrap up of Phase II and beginning of Phase III (advanced software loadouts). In the meantime, I have to look for a replacement hard drive for Quincy IX. . . since the 20GB I had loaded for it is about to be tossed out the window. . .

Grrr. . . most of a weekend's work down the drain. . . I would've been better off if I had played video games all weekend. . .

Grrr. . .

Trials and Tribulations. . . September 15 2004, 12:55 am
Not sure what's going on with the world these days. . . but man. . . interpersonal issues have definitely hit some snags lately. . . Evil Twin has been dealing with issues in regards to his female love interest, and it seems to be a pretty serious issue to him. While I'm glad to have been able to offer some advice to him (hell, at least be there for a guy I've known and hung out with for 8 years), I do hope everything turns out okay for him.

On the other hand, things between YanYan and me have been a little rocky lately. . . can't really say any more on that. . . except that I'm not ready to give up yet. . .

In the meantime, Net+ exam preparations are almost complete. Except for some reason my practice tests somehow got lost. . . so we'll see what the training vendor says and go from there. The good news is that there is a chance that my MCSE exams (at least those that I pass) will be paid for by CT, which is a very good thing, indeed.

The Gathering of the Four. . . September 12 2004, 07:31 pm
Well. . . this weekend was a special treat for several people. . . it had been years since the core of NTXF has gathered in place and marched onto the battlefield as one. . . and this weekend the four founding members were happily reunited and began to take the electronic gaming world by force. . . Jordo, Antilles, Grumpy, and Paladin. . . the proverbial four horsemen that had been long separated but never dissolved. . .

Good times. . . good times. . .

So yeah, lots of gaming goodness was to be had, and we also went to see Resident Evil Apocalypse last night as well. While not a Academy Award contender, it had its ups. . . although my biggest complaint was the barge-through-church-glass-riding-a-big-motorcycle-with-big-guns scene. . . a little TOO cliche. . .

In other news, I managed to liquidate two of the older Quincies. . . so that's that. . . at least they're going to a good home. . .

Wheee. . . Monday's coming up again. . . yet another fun week at work. . .

The nameless one. . . September 9 2004, 09:23 pm
To say that the past few days have been busy and hectic would be a insulting understatement. While Labor Day weekend was nice and relaxing, any and all signs of nice and relaxing disappeared as the work week began. That's not to say that its a bad thing. . . but just that I find myself with less and less time to do other things. Like updating the logs.

So there's a group of people who started a AD&D (3rd Edition rules) game last night, which I opted to join. It was such a rare event for something like this to happen that Evil Twin opted to join too. So we wound up with a pissed off Ranger, a nonchalant Sorcerer, a reserved Druid, and a amnesiatic Fighter (me) wandering around in a not so nice town in the middle of a freakin' desert. Since I usually play as a noble Paladin of some sort in these types of games, I figured I'll play as a chaotic neutral wildcard this time around. Things should get interesting with my character asking "Now can I draw my sword?" during every other encounter.

Even though I tried to reduce the number of Quincies that are in use here at OC4, I find myself fighting a losing battle. At the moment, I have nine (9) systems available, five (5) of which are running at any given time, sometimes all of them if there is the need. Which is to say its a scary thought, even after I dropped three (3) Quincies from the TO&E last month.

On the other hand, all the running Quincies haven't been overhauled in a long while (the newest additions Quincy XIII and I3800 don't count, and Quincy XII was the last to be overhauled almost a year ago). So I decided to give myself yet another project and do some shuffling around with the systems, and do some rebuilds in the coming months. The .plan is available to be viewed in my Stats page, as usual.

YanYan's extremely depressed lately about the dismal outlook of her job hunt. I wish there were something I can do to brighten her day, but having been there not too long ago, I know exactly how she feels. . . but that doesn't make these times pass by any easier. . .

Labor Day Weekend September 5 2004, 02:23 pm
Mom and sis are visiting this weekend. . . so I'm appreciative of the downtime this will generate. So far, this weekend has been pretty relaxing. . . which is a good thing since this past week had been pretty hectic at work.

Nothing much else happening. . . just feeling flat out lethargic and lazy today. . . so will probably be juggling studying for my Net+ and playing games.

Ahhh. . . lethargy. . .
