Revisionings. . . July 31 2004, 03:01 am
Here I thought I could have a relaxing weekend. . . well. . . I thought wrong.

I've been drafted into YanYan's final efforts in finishing her portfolio. Which means I get to totally revamp her website. . . which I spent days building only a few months ago. . . but in the end its worth it. . . to me at least. . .

Evil Twin's back from his fire academy refresher. He'll be starting at the Jollyville FD on Monday. Good times. . . good times. . .

Since I'm updating webpages anyways, I guess I'll work on the site over the next few days. . . I've already pruned the links page, and I'll tackle the pictures page next.

Triumph July 31 2004, 12:03 am
The deployment of the test Exchange server at work came to a close today after I spent the entire day reworking the VPN system we had in place. Emphasis on "had", because it stopped working during the major power hit we took back in the beginning of June.

So yes, I'm just going to sit here and be happy. See? This is me sitting here being happy.

Now comes the testing phase. . . and oh boy is this going to be fun. . .

Breakthrough July 30 2004, 12:31 am
Made some major breakthrough at work today with the Exchange server. It finally decided to behave properly after I threatened it with a tesla coil. And then say computers have no human emotions. . . Now I just have to tackle the backup system project. . .

Ni-Lie's new computer took a step backwards though. . . I just finished building the damn thing for him not a month ago, and already one of his hard drives is starting to fail. Lo and behold it was his drive full of anime stuffings. Well, guess no anime for him now that the hard drive has complete and permanent amnesia. . .

Rough waters July 29 2004, 11:30 am
YanYan's definitely under some pressure lately what with her deadline on the portfolio and all, and it shows. Poor baby. . . too bad my artistic skills are nowhere near her level. Only thing I can do is support her in other ways (like installing a drawing tablet for her laptop, giving her a shoulder to cry on, etc). Poor baby. . .

Meanwhile, I'm now tasked with both implementing the Exchange server (which is still denying access to my manager) as well as designing an enterprise-class backup system, with a focus on our remote road warriors. Fun times, fun times. . .

Now the question is when am I going to get time to work on my Net+ certification?

Voyage voyage. . . July 24 2004, 11:27 pm
After barely evading a lumbering thunderstorm that threatened to wreck my plans in Austin, YanYan and I headed back to Camelot Command for the weekend.

Time was spent taking YanYan to the Art Museum in which we managed to enlighten ourselves. . . well. . . maybe. . . while the Bismark rested at the shipyards for a routine overhaul.

Unfortunately, the overhaul was anything but routine. Along with the scheduled maintenance that needed to be done, there were a few minor mechanical/electrical issues that I mentioned to the yard chief for him and his crew to take care of. For whatever reason (and this is the second time in the row) the yard chief neglected to contact me about the status of repairs. Which resulted in me contacting the station manager informing them of the possibility of me stealing their heavy cruiser that was on loan to me while the battleship was being worked on. Obviously they didn't like that idea, because they hustled around (after closing time) and prepped the Bismark for immediate departure. I received personal assurances from the station manager that this would be investigated and will be resolved by the time of my next visit. Frankly I really don't have anything bad to say about the shipyard's customer service. The yard chief I used to work with was awesome. The current yard chief isn't so awesome. I'll have to bring this concern up with the station manager during my next stopover.

Other than that. . . managed to upgrade some of my standard equipment during this trip, as well as fix alot of network issues that dad was having at Freeport.

Another 2.5 hour trip, a little R&R, and then its back to work again on Monday. Hopefully I'll have that Exchange 2003 Server fully up and running sometime next week (its 90% done). Stupid MS had to make everything 200x more difficult. I swear. . . Exchange 5.5 never took me this long to configure.

Home Improvement July 23 2004, 01:16 am
YanYan does it again. Somehow she found out that somebody was selling a black leather sofa (which I've been wanting one for quite a while now) at a reasonable price. We took a look at it on Monday, rearranged alot of furniture on Wedensday to make room for it, and finally moved it in tonight (with the help of Evil Twin).

Its not new or in mint condition or anything, but it was the kind of sofa that I had wanted. The leather was showing some of its age, but nothing a bottle of leather care won't fix in time (the previous owner for whatever reason managed to spoil the leather).

So first she comes up with a major component for the coffee table. . . now she comes up with the main seating for the living room. . . what will YanYan come up with next?

Thanks sweetie!

Pooped. . . July 18 2004, 04:57 pm
Finally was able to put together a get-together last night. . . and it looks like it was a smashing success (successfulness being measured by whether people were having fun). Lots of water volleyball, DDR, Set, and various other games were played and food consumed. And all's well in the world.

Being able to link up with old (presumably missing) friends and catch up with current friends and being introduced to new ones is definitely a good thing.

The only problem is. . . I'm pooped. Being a host for a party takes alot out of me. . . and YanYan too. She's such a cutie by helping out at the party. I couldn't have done it without her.

Okay. . . some time for rest and relaxation and studying for my Net+ exam before heading back to work tomorrow. Whee. . .

The Power of Alchemy July 11 2004, 06:19 pm
Every time I watch Tenchi Muyo In Love, I'm moved by the quality of the film. At first I thought it was the story line involved (which may not be original, but still good storytelling nonetheless), or the artwork which detailed each character's movement. . . but after much contemplation and meditation on this subject, I always come back to the work put into the soundtrack. . . the themes, the action sequences, and of course the coda.

Incidentally, Christopher Franke, who was the creator of TMIL's score, was also the creator of Babylon 5's music and themes. If memory serves me correct he was also involved in several other projects over the years. Not too shabby. . .

In the meantime I'll just sit here and drown myself in the music. Its doing wonders in stirring up my creative energies. Hopefully it'll help me continue work on the Brigade series. . . it takes tremendous effort to describe in words an image that I have in the mind's eye. . . *sigh*. . .

Argus. . . come in Argus! July 9 2004, 10:16 am
In a great display of exercise in excessiveness (yes, I'm willing to admit that). . . my order for Steel Battalion (people with XBoxes or have played XBoxes should know what I'm talking about) came in yesterday. And YanYan and I spent about two hours testing it out and getting into each other's way while playing it. The controls are just as impressive as the advertisements claim, but its not designed to be controlled by two people. . . :P So yeah, any movies or animes you watch where it shows two people vying for control of a huge ass mech. . . yeah. . . its not pretty. . . our mech fell down flat on its face more than once during our sorties. But its fun though. . . and YanYan's actually getting the hang of piloting the VT by herself. I'm proud of you sweetie!

Also managed to finish building that coffee table this week. The main structure was completed on Saturday, but the reinforcing rebars weren't installed until two days ago. It looks pretty good though, since it manages to fit in really well with the living room's decor. Not bad for a cooperative between my woodworking skills and YanYan's giant piece of glass.

Whee. . . its the weekend again. . . YanYan's graduate design exhibition is tomorrow, so we won't be doing any wild parties tonight. Probably will end up watching the rest of the Tenchi anime with her, or crash land more VTs. Or both. . .

For everything else. . . July 5 2004, 02:26 am
So today's plan went out the window five minutes after execution, but it actually turned out pretty well. Basically, it went something like this. . .

Sony MiniDV Camcorder with lots of accessories - $900
Dinner with family and friends - $50
Tickets for fireworks show we should've gone to (but was late for) - $40
Deciding to get fireworks and put on a show ourselves - $90
Spending time with family and friends setting off fireworks - priceless

For all the precious times that we need to spend with family and friends remembering the high price of freedom. . .

The gang's all here July 4 2004, 02:36 pm
Turns out both the patron and the matron came down for the weekend. It's going to be a full house for the next couple of days.

Managed to finish that coffee table though. Needs a couple more of rebars for structual reinforcement, but otherwise looks pretty good for a first attempt. :)

Rain rain gone away July 3 2004, 01:44 am
Damn. . . that was one of the longest stretches of rain I've seen in a while. Eighteen days of continous rain. Flash flood warning left and right. At least I'm not back in Outpost Command III where flooding would've been a major concern.

Its also been busy busy busy around here. All of last week was spent working working working, then spent some time at the second hiring event at CT for this month. Then spent the rest of this week working working working. . . punctuated by a late night showing of Spiderman 2 (which was pretty good I must say), an overdue visit with the Sarge (and got more than an eyeful), and now prepping for the matron's arrival tomorrow evening.

YanYan and I made a quick shopping trip at Dillard's tonight (the original idea was for some satin bed sheets), but we got sidetracked and instead got a couple of sets of crystal coffee table games (tic tac toe and chess) at very reasonable prices.

Tomorrow I get to work on building the coffee table that they would go on. . .

No rest for the wicked I say. . .
