Belated spring cleaning April 30 2003, 11:48 pm
Since the Media Center project has been scrapped as of last night, I decided to busy myself with cleaning OC4 up a bit, which has been somewhat neglected for a while. The place "feels" cleaner now. . .

Meanwhile, I've been putting off working on my web app for long enough. Hopefully I'll get enough motivation to start working on it again tomorrow. Hopefully. . . :P

CCCCC-MKIV-C. . . KIA. . . April 30 2003, 12:25 am
I never thought it would actually happen. But I suppose at some point in time it would. . . but in the years and years and years (practically my entire life) that I have worked with computers. . . not one of them have left without being in better shape than before they came to me. The solemn oath that medical practioners take, "Do no harm", is exactly the same code I abide by when working with computers. . . and I was so proud that I have done no wrong to these electronic beings.

And yet it was probably my own pride that caused this. . . In thinking that I could make a Packard Bell computer better and faster than it originally was. . . stronger and more powerful attributes than its creator endowed it. . . what was I thinking? I am not a god. . . just a mere techno-magi. . . a good one. . . at least I thought I was. . . It was a worthy goal, I had thought, to use my powers and my abilities to bring the old brute into the new millenium. . . it was something that should have been workable. . .

But this? Quincy IV-C now lies dead. . . and the Media Center project (to put a computer in the entertainment center to facilitate the broadcast of non-conventional media) which I have been working on for the past week is now dead in the water. . .

*sigh*. . .

It is with much regret that I announce the death of Quincy IV-C at 0:02, April 30, 2003.

Fun in the sun April 27 2003, 10:02 pm
For a last-minute-thrown-together-poorly-planned party, things went pretty well today. People started trickling in around 4PM, and we were grilling steaks and hotdogs by 5PM, water volleyballing (with other people in the complex) at around 6PM, and winding up in the hot tub before 8PM. A couple of people were thoroughly drenched, so I had them dry their clothes in the dryer before letting them leave. There were a mass number of mischevious antics committed, including but not limited to a water balloon fight in front of the women's locker room. But all in all it was a fairly fun filled day.

If this is any indication of what summer is going to be like, I'm going to be a very happy man.

Roasted April 27 2003, 11:21 am
Finally went to a social event that the apt complex was sponsoring, and met some more neighbors during the free brunch. This was then followed by another semi-social event of free sodas at the pool. I kind of went a little over-board by staying out in the sun playing water volleyball a bit too much. I am now in a nice shade of red, but not exactly hurting. So I guess that's a good thing. . . assuming it doesn't start hurting anytime soon.

The main event last night was Rocky's party. Rocky, a friend of Ben's, thought about throwing a birthday party for himself. This party, however, happened to coincide with when he was finally getting divorced from a unhappy marriage. So, he decided to kill two birds with one stone, and threw a divorce/birthday party by inviting anyone and everyone. There were rumors of him inviting along a couple of female escorts, but there were no signs of them by the time we arrived. Still, it was fun socializing with people and finding out how badly I'm out of practice in table pool still. Unfortunately I won't be able to practice using the pool here at the complex until Tuesday, when the cue sticks are back from repairs and the table has been resurfaced.

Plans for today? Probably a fun-filled day at the swimming pool again. With water volleyball and grilling food with ACMers in the works.

Welcome to the land of used-to-be-free April 25 2003, 03:01 pm
Good god. . . how stupid can humans get? Was just informed by intel that the Plano Police Department has gone berserk. Going 41 in a 40MPH zone (nevermind that you just got off the highway and shifting from the exit ramp)? So sorry, here's a ticket. No front license plate (even though you were just minding your own business and going to get groceries after cleaning your rear license plate)? See you in court. Turning without blinkers (in broad daylight on a left turn only lane, with a green turn arrow)? Let's take a ride downtown.

Reckless speeding is contemptible, agreed. But when variables are not allowed into the equation (i.e. bigger truck driving next to you throws off the officer's radar scanner, making him/her thinking you're going 5MPH more than you actually are. . . etc)?

If an officer was chasing your sorry ass down, which license plate on your car would he be looking at? That's right. . . the rear. What the hell does that have to do with the front? Don't get me started about cameras being installed at intersections/stoplights; there's so much underhanded crap that goes along with it that its basically become a revenue machine for cities, not law enforcement. Not to mention it introduces even more traffic congestion after it is installed (and it has nothing to do with stopping red-light runners).

This complete and utter bullshit of sticking to the letter of the law without any rational interpretation is simply one more step towards the totalitarinism that threatened the greater western world merely half a century ago. I understand the need for laws and regulations to protect and serve the benevolent populace. But the said benevolent populace should not have to be chained and ground into such subservience, without any regards to their abilities nor matters of circumstance, in order to maintain that kind of peace and serenity.

I used to have respect for the men and women who served and protected. But this isn't serving nor protecting. This is just being downright anal. This is even worse than Richardson PD. . . at least they were only anal on excessive speeding.

So. . . to come full circle. . . I'm getting the impression that this is no longer the land of the free. . . more like the land of the chain and quarters. Maybe one of these days the ones in power would strip away the facade of democracy and admit to the reality of things. Until then, we the populace must suffer through their stupdity. Even though we didn't vote for them.

Given the current situation, it looks like I have been exiled from Camelot Command until someone/thing/being restores some sense of sanity/rationality there.

Not that I'm bitter about all this. . . no. . .

Trigun. . . again! April 23 2003, 09:30 pm
Semi-productive day today. After I got home from work I decided to rebuild an old Packard Bell that I had salvaged from Bonnie's parents into a media center (MP3 station and VCD/movie player). So far its still touch and go. . . damn PB for using sub-standard parts. . . then again I'd forgotten how damn slow Pentium 120s with 32MB of EDO RAM can be. . .

Other than that. . . I've finally finished my Trigun collection. At last. . . I can finish watching the series while laughing every other minute at Vash's dumb-luck antics.

Once again into the breach. . . April 22 2003, 10:13 pm
Today ends my impromptu excursion to Denver with Bonnie. The few days of unwinding helped maintain my sanity, and it also gave us two the time needed to mend some fences.

The initial cold front that hit us while enroute really put a damper on me (because I didn't bring any winter clothes, anticipating a nice sunny spring-ish weather), but fortunately the temperture remained in the 60s and the sun helped out as well. While we did see snow on the way to Colorado, there weren't any on the ground in Denver upon our arrival.

I managed to tear my collarbone again while helping Bonnie moving some stuff. At this rate I don't think that hairline fracture is going to heal at all. . . :( Its really really sore right now. . . but at least I'm not completely immobilized. . .

Okay. . . have to finish unpacking, then catch some much needed sleep before heading off to work in the morning. And then. . . back to conquering the world. . . with a sore shoulder. . . :P

News from the front April 20 2003, 01:18 am
"This is Paladin reporting from the front. . . I am here embedded with the 3rd Denver Expeditionary Force, and I must say things are going along very well with our tactical advance. We made very good time today and managed to stick to the pre-arranged battle plan. There was very little resistance along the way, and we even managed to find a huge stash of weapons of mass destruction near the border of New Mexico, where masses of cattle at a slaughterhouse were generating enough stench to wipe out an entire city. As we skirted the outskirts of New Mexico, weather conditions began to worsen, and we soon found ourselves in a winter wonderland. There was much cheery reception in the local townsfolk along our path of advance, and the troops are much heartened by this display. We are currently encamped at the outskirts of Denver, and will be beginning the final assault in the morning. This is Paladin reporting live from the 3rd Denver, out!"

Hello, hello, Its a New World! April 19 2003, 12:36 am
I now have that really cheery song from .hack Legends stuck in my head. Its not that bad of a song. . . and its really really cheery (borderline cheesy). But given my current mood, its quite fitting.

The replacement fuel pod for Enigma One arrived a few days ago, and I managed to get that over to Kyle for him to begin some prep work on it before we install it. Replacement sensor modules are also enroute and should be here shortly. Discounting the few remaining damaged (but serviceable) components on Enigma One, she should be ride-worthy by the beginning of May. And not a moment too soon. . . :)

Just about every last detail has been taken care of, the last bit of clothing has been packed, the latest software patches installed on Quincy VIII, stoves turned off and dishes washed. . . in less than seven hours the 3rd Denver expeditionary force will be moving out, and more than likely with me at the helm. It should be an interesting 16-hour trip, providing plenty of time for me to catch up with Bonnie. Then a quick two-day recuperation period before I come back to OC4 and resume normal operations.

The next four days should be quite interesting. . .

Great balls of fire April 18 2003, 12:54 am
Whoowhie. . . Bonnie finally got into town after missing her original flight, and we've been busy running errands ever since then. It looks like our original plan for a roadtrip is back on track, so I'll be off in the middle of the great mid-west during all day Saturday. Hopefully we can make the 16-hour trip in one day, but we'll see.

Meanwhile. . . . . . there were a few others things I had meant to put in this update, but I've completely forgotten what they were. . . . . . :P Stupid senility. . .

dot Hack April 15 2003, 11:04 pm
Just finished watching .hack - Legend of the Twilight Bracelet, and am now completely addicted to the idea of The World. In fact, it made me go out and get The World software (aka .hack//Infection for the PS2) and start playing that. As I said. . . I'm completely hooked. Damn them and their wonderfully executed marketing scheme. . .

In other news, Bonnie managed to miss her flight tonight due to the gross incompetence of the public transportation system in Denver. She gets to make up her flight tomorrow, but that's almost 24 hours lost because of it. That's just one more bad mark in my book against city buses. Its great that they reduce pollution and traffic and all, but I'm not sure having errors like this and complete lack of accountability is worth it.

Bumpy ride April 15 2003, 10:04 am
Things are a-changing at work. . . apparently we're about to lose half of the crew at the tech bench for various reasons, but the good news is the new supervisor is fairly competent and I do not forsee any problems with us getting along.

That said, things are actually going better than I would expect at Best Buy. I've managed to pick up most of the procedures, and am venturing into making some judgement calls based on what I know of the company's policy. Customers I deal with generally walk away with a smile on their face, and a few have even recommended to management that I should be kept on staff for as long as possible (due to their impression that I actually know what I am talking about when recommending products). It feels good to have made some small impact in their lives like this.

Who knows. . . at this rate I might decide to make BB a semi-permanent shelter and wait out this economic storm.

Oops revisited April 13 2003, 12:50 am
There was suppose to be a fun-filled broomball game tonight. The game did happen, but unfortunately for me, it wasn't really fun-filling. For the 60-minute game, I managed to injure myself (take a wild guess. . . first two don't count. . .) again at my collarbone. This happened 10 minutes into the game, and I tried to play for 20 more minutes before finally retiring from the field. It was very disappointing. Fortunately, the rest of the team was able to pick up the slack and finish the game 2-1.

As for me. . . taking two advils and hoping it'll feel better in the morning. If it doesn't. . . well. . . I was looking forward to a cybernetic replacement. . .

Bait n' switch April 12 2003, 12:11 pm
Going to be a tough few days coming up. . . and at this point I'm not even sure it is all worth it. My original plan was to be on a roadtrip to Denver because Bonnie wanted some company while she drove her parent's car up there (another story). Which means requesting time off from Best Buy (and getting some flak about it because I still "new" by their book). Which means planning things out in advance and hope nothing breaks. But was just informed by her this morning that it may all be moot point because her mom thinks its a better idea to let someone else do the driving (which I'm assuming was decided on a spur of the moment). . . after we did all the planning and I did all the legwork. So here I am gulping down food before my shift starts (for literally the next four days, because I'm not scheduled for the rest of the week), and wondering to myself was it all worth it? I really was looking forward to getting away for a few days, after having been stuck in Austin for the past several months, but I guess there's no point crying over spoiled milk. I'm not entirely sure I feel justified in feeling jipped, but after being jerked around like this, and for the price I paid, I feel jipped. That'll teach me to be a nice guy and not know how to say no. I wonder if I can get a refund. . .

Not that I'm bitter about this or anything. . .

The only bright side is my web app has reached alpha stage. A few more weeks of work and it just might go gold. . .

Cheap Thrills April 10 2003, 10:58 pm
Been out and about for the past few days. First off, Daryl's computer decided that it didn't want to play nice anymore, so I was off to Waco on Tuesday. After that I headed straight back home, mainly to pay my respects to my visiting grandparents. It was nice seeing them again, and my grandfather once again gasped in surprise at discovering how I've finally become taller than him.

Was shuttling back and forth throught the DFW area scrounging for parts and what-nots to fix the computers at dad's shop. Apparently one of the CDRWs called it quits, so off I went in search of a replacement drive. Found one for cheap at Best Buy, and word soon spread throughout the Chinatown area. I think I should start getting some kind of commission at this rate. :P

Another piece of news spread throughout the Chinatown area Tuesday as well. Apparently my entire family has done such a swell job of hiding the fact that I had come into possession of a new car, that only now did anyone found out. My parents derived some small enjoyment out of everyone's surprised look and insistent inquiries. I did learn one thing out of this though. . . if one does not flaunt what one has, one derives more enjoyment out of other's bafflement in the future. Then again. . . I'm not sure that was the lesson my parents wanted me to learn. . . hmm. . .

On to something more serious. Supposedly there is now a very dangerous rumor floating about in the Plano area. A quick background. . . the shopping center where dad's shop is located at contains an asian supermarket. It was one of the first in the area to be owned locally, but is now being threatened by a new supermarket that recently began operating, and financed by a group in California. When the new place opened, a fierce price war was waged, but the older shop was not deterred, and survived for the most part. But that all changed with the new SARS scare. This might be considered hearsay, but it must be said. There have been reports (by customers who patronize both shops) that employees at the new shop is warning customers not to visit the old shop because someone had contracted SARS there and had died from it. The result? The entire shopping center has been devoid of customers for the past week. I have personally been there, and I can personally verify that there have been no contractions of SARS in the area, and although I cannot verify who started the rumors, it is a very bastardly way of stealing business from the competition. It not only hurts the old supermarket, it hurts EVERYONE in the shopping center when unfounded rumors like this is allowed to continue. I really wish I could smack whoever started the rumor with a piece of cold fish, but I will settle for breaking every bone in their body, just to make my point clear. A similiar incident occured in LA, and LAPD has already stated that starting rumors such as this is considered a crime, classified as libel, and may (insert your choice of diety here) have mercy on your soul if I find out who you are. I had higher hopes that asian business people can conduct themselves accordingly during these times, but I guess I'm expecting too much.

While scavenging for parts for dad at Micro Center today, I found a PS2 light gun on clearance for $7. Its a Logic3 P99G2 recoil pistol with a reload foot-pedal. It was quite fun blasting baddies in Time Crisis II while on full-auto. May evil (who resides in TC2) beware. . . for I have gun, and I will travel. . .

Zippity doo dah. . . April 6 2003, 10:20 pm
Was quite productive today. I'm proud of myself. After a semi-productive day at Best Buy, I decided to forgo lunch and grabbed my laptop and swim trunks and headed for the pool. Despite a clammy morning, it turned out to be a beautiful day (pushing 90 degrees even). Spent about 45 minutes happily working on my new web app project, using my much coveted wireless network. I must say, it is such a pleasure to be able to work like that. . . crunching on documentation and code, while enjoying the sunny weather and scenary. Its like having my cake AND eating it. And those 45 minutes were quite productive, since I managed to reach a new milestone in the developement. Like I said, I was quite proud of myself.

So I rewarded myself by jumping into the freezing cold pool. Not much reward, you say? Well, I then swam a few laps as a good measure. Besides. . . the water wasn't that cold once you get used to it. . . :P

Wrapped up the expedition by soaking in the hot tub once again. This time, a father of two that's been there lately noticed my laptop, and we struck up a conversation about web app dev. Fun stuff all around.

To end the perfect evening I pranced through the kitchen while making a HUGE salmon steak with mashed potatoes and super veggies (green beans, onions, and mushrooms). I think I derived more fun cooking it than eating it, because I think I've finally figured out the secret formula for cooking the best salmon steak. And no, I'm not telling. It was a HUGE steak though, and surprisingly I'm not going to be able to finish it. I'm sitting here looking at it, and its only 1/4 eaten!!!!!

Service Tech Horror Story #1 April 6 2003, 05:39 pm
I tried to be nice. I tried to be very very nice. But the customer either realizes that he's at fault and put up a show for just the hell of it, or he's really just that stubborn. His VCR was in for servicing, because the IC board containing the Play/FF/RW/Stop buttons was broken. Since it was covered under warranty, it should be simple fix, right? Turns out, the VCR was rejected by the service center due to insect infestation, which is NOT covered under the warranty (furthermore, the warranty was void and null as of this point forward because of the infestation). When all this came to light, the customer blew up and caused quite a scene in front of the service desk. Like I said, I tried to be nice. And I'm sure he can explain why he was so uncooperative. But man. . . how hard is it to keep your place of residence clean and (relatively) free of insects? I've heard of dust bunny colonies before, but what was inside of that VCR was something else entirely. . .

Heal spell April 2 2003, 10:40 pm
So some gracious spirit cast a heal spell on me. . . and I'm pretty much back on my feet again. I was pretty much wiped out on Monday night (down to about 16% operational capacity), struggled through yesterday (wavering between 27%-63%), and by this morning I was pretty much good to go again (82%). I was sorely tempted to go soak in the hot tub again, since the weather was better than Monday. . . but I decided not to risk too much at this point in time.

So instead of the hot tub, I went and hung out with Reed for a bit. Haven't seen him in a long long while since he left Design Edge, and apparently he's just been goofing off and recuperating from working too much at DE. He showed up at the Mixer mixer last weekend, so I managed to get his new contact information. Much discussion ensued today at his brother's place (where he's living right now), mainly to figure out how to put our collective talents to good use. Some interesting ideas came out of it, which I am not at liberty to discuss.

We then proceeded to grill some burgers, and chit chatted about various topics. This was then followed by lots of pool (the hit-ball-into-pocket kind of pool, not swimming pool pool), in which Reed's friends Kent and Joel joined in on. Needless to say I was WAY out of practice, and much suckage ensued. So as part of my daily SEAL training regimen, I'm adding to that some pool shooting skills training as well. I'm starting to get the idea that there are not enough hours in the day to do everything I want done. . . hmm. . . maybe I should make my next project some kind of time/continuum editting mechnical contraption thingama-jingie. . .

Mal. . . func. . . tion. . . . . . April 1 2003, 08:37 am
Great. . . so I stayed out a bit longer than I should have yesterday at the pool, and now I'm stricken with a slight fever. That'll teach me to be gung-ho. . . owww. . . my head hurts. . .

Not a good way to start off April. . .
